The impact of plantation expansion on forests has resurfaced after the European Union Law on Deforestation (EU Deforestation Regulation / EUDR) was officially enforced on 16 May 2023. The EUDR was issued to fight deforestation and climate change and a form of responsibility for the European Union to import various products produced from forest clearing. With the EUDR, all product exports ranging from palm oil, coffee, soy, cocoa, and beef to chocolate, rubber, paper, and leather will be refused entry to the 27 EU countries if they do not pass a deforestation due diligence. The EUDR requires every exporter to guarantee that their products do not come from areas resulting from deforestation.
