Sacrifice (Qurban) is not just ritual worship but has become a major annual socioeconomic tradition. As the largest Muslim country and one of the largest economies in the world, the potential for sacrifice in Indonesia is significant; therefore, if it is appropriately managed, it should be able to become an economic force that not only increases the welfare of mustahiq but also empowers smallholder breeders whose welfare levels are also low. Social engineering is needed so that the sacrifice does not only become a mere religious institution but also a welfare economic institution. Amid low national meat consumption and the country’s high dependence on imported meat, efforts to mainstream sacrifice as a socioeconomic institution are increasingly finding relevance and urgency.
